What is Compounding?

PERSONALISED MEDICATIONS FOR UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS

Because one-size-fits-all doesn’t work for everyone.

If every person is unique, why should everyone take the same medications?

Not every medication has the same effect in every person. Some people may require a smaller or alternative dosage form to achieve the desired effect. A compounding pharmacist can solve that patient’s problem. Per your doctor’s order, our compounding team can tailor your medication to fit YOUR unique needs, so you get the most benefit you need from your drug therapy.

A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH TO CARE

Compounding brings together patients, doctors, and pharmacists for better outcomes.

We apply the patient, physician, and pharmacist trio to ensure you get the best possible care. Our compounding pharmacists are on the cutting edge of pharmacy and can offer your physician unique and innovative ways to treat your specific health care needs.
Whether it be simply preparing a preservative or dye-free medication, or changing a medication only available orally to a transdermal cream, our compounding pharmacist can assist in solving your unique medical needs.

SPECIALISED SOLUTIONS FOR SPECIALISED NEEDS

Compounders focus on meeting special needs.

This may involve compounding alternatives in hormone replacement therapy, height/weight-appropriate paediatric medications, medications for veterinarians in various dosage forms and flavours, or dosage forms such as transdermal gels. The ultimate goal in preparing any of these customised medications is to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic outcome.

We solve medication challenges through compounding.

Although pharmacists compound medications for many reasons, the biggest one is patient non-compliance. If a patient does not take the drug that their physician prescribes because they can’t swallow large pills, are allergic to dyes in the tablet, or can’t stand the taste, then their therapy is not going to be successful. By compounding the medication to fix those problems, we can effectively treat that patient, increasing compliance and achieving a successful outcome.

INNOVATIVE PAIN MANAGEMENT

Compounding pharmacists have also helped patients who are experiencing chronic pain.

For example, many arthritic patients cannot take certain medications due to gastrointestinal side effects. Working with their physician, a compounding pharmacist can provide them with a topical anti-inflammatory or analgesic to bypass the GI tract entirely. Addiction to pain medication is a serious concern for many of our chronic pain patients. Working closely with their physician, we can offer them other alternatives to managing their pain. Through successful work with transdermal dosing, we have been able to effectively treat chronic pain and minimise some common side effects such as sedation and constipation!

COMMON SITUATIONS WHERE COMPOUNDING HELPS

  • When a medication is not available in the strength needed
  • When a patient is allergic to preservatives, dyes, or fillers
  • When the taste of a medication is not acceptable
  • When demand is too low for mass production (orphan drugs)
  • When a medication is discontinued
  • When an alternate dosage form is required (capsule, cream, etc.)

The team here at Compounded Pty Ltd firmly believe that since every patient is unique, their medication should be tailored to meet those unique needs!
